How to Create Less Pollution When Sailing

Pollution is an increasing problem, as we are all generating more waste and are polluting the earth more heavily. If you create pollution when on a boat, this can harm waterways and affect vegetation, ecosystems and marine life. Here are some simple ways to help save energy when sailing:

  • If you use a petrol engine, slow down the speed. This helps burn less fuel – and it will also save you some money as an added bonus.
  • Never throw anything overboard (except the anchor!) You shouldn’t be introducing anything into the water that wouldn’t be there naturally.
  • Find environmentally friendly ways to heat your boat. This is more applicable if you have a canal boat, rather than, say, a yacht. Think about ways of keeping heat in once the space is warmer.
  • Use sustainable products to repair your boat. If you are using wood, make sure it has come from sustainably managed forests.
