Repairing Holes in a Fibreglass Boat

It is easy to make your own repairs to a fibreglass boat. This is one of the main advantages to having GRP as the main boat material – it won’t cost you a fortune to have the necessary repairs made to it.

The first step is to choose the correct resin. Polyester resin is usually the material that a GRP boat will be made from in the first place. It may not be the best option for all boats as its adhesive qualities leave a little to be desired and it will shrink when dry. It is by far the cheapest option, though.

The other main type of resin is an epoxy resin. This is better for bonding to other materials and it is mixed with a hardener to plug the hole. It is much more expensive but the repair will be of a higher standard and it is very tough, lasting a long time.
